PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

2007 – January 2016:  Hess Corporation

  • Completions Engineering Manager – Dual Role - Drilling and Completions Excellence

  • Lead a team of highly qualified subject matter experts which supported Hess Drilling Completion needs globally and worked with both internal and external partners in the development and application of new technologies.  I also served as the Completions subject matter expert of the team.  As such, I was intimately involved with projects such as Valhall, S. Arne, Bakken, Utica, and North Malay Basin, just to name a few.

  • Senior Engineering Advisor – Capture and Appraise:

  • As a member of a the Capture and Appraise team, I lead the completions designs for all new unconventional reservoirs as well as helped evaluate the potential of all new areas Hess was considering around the world, such as China, Australia, Argentina, Gulf States, Argentina, Canada, Russia, Poland and France.

  • Completions/Stimulation – Dual Role:

  • Project Manager, Infill Pilot Project, a multimillion dollar, multidiscipline project to evaluate the drainage radius and required frac spacing in the Bakken.

  • Engineering Advisor – Bakken Completions Design: Lead the development of the company’s current completion and stimulation standard for the Bakken Shale in North Dakota, the hottest play in on-shore US.  This meant a total change in philosophy from open-hole completions and one bull-head fracture treatment to running a liner with packers and multistage, multi-zone fracturing.  The success of this program converted hundreds of thousands of acres from marginal to highly attractive and profitable, even at $60/bbl oil. Lead the first multilateral and hybrid completions in the Bakken

  • Designed the first multilateral multistage well in the Bakken.  The design became a standard and is now being copied by other operators.

1999 –2007:  MJ Economides Consultants, Inc.

  • Exploration/Production: Managed the development of Hydraulic Fracture Design software for COSL. Worked with a number of high-profile projects throughout the world in the areas of hydraulic fracturing, production enhancement and production optimization.  Designed and supervised the first successful transversely multi-fractured horizontal well in Algeria.  Evaluated the stimulation program of the largest Russian oil company and proposed improvements.   Pushing the limits of hydraulic fracture stimulation by applying the latest in Data Mining, Neural Networks and Unified Fracture Design, to significantly increase well and reservoir performance. World-record fracturing treatments are designed.

  • Education/Training:

  • Trained production engineers and field supervisors on the practical aspects of Hydraulic fracturing.

  • Managed an 18-month long Masters in Petroleum Engineering program between the University of Houston, Houston, Texas, La Salle University, Mexico City, Mexico and Petroleos Mexicanos.  The program let to 18 PEMEX engineers receiving a Masters degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Houston.

  • New field exploration: Analyzed the results of Energy Absorption Analysis and developed the business cases for a new, 18 Tcf and 1.35 billion bbls of oil, field discovery in the Cook Inlet Basin, Alaska.

  • LNG: Developed several business cases involving the whole LNG chain, from finding and developing the gas, to liquefaction, transportation, locating the LNG terminal and marketing the gas.  This lead to the building of the LNG receiving terminals in Freeport, Sabine Pass, Corpus Christi and Creole Trails.

  • Weatherford International: Developed Weatherford’s latest tubing movement software.  During the process, discovered and corrected the problems of applying the accepted methods of tube movement analysis to modern completions. US 6,526,819 B2 patent issued.

  • PDVSA: Worked with PDVSA engineers in introducing high permeability hydraulic fracturing to a gas field in Eastern Venezuela.

  • Middle East: Worked on an extremely high level, technology transfer project with a Middle Eastern company (in Oman), to introduce hydraulic fracturing in a massive way in the area

1996-1999 UNION PACIFIC RESOURCES – Fort Worth, Texas

1997-1999 Operations Engineer

Monitored daily production and operations of over 275 active wells in the Austin Chalk, Giddings Field area. Prepared AFE’s, recommended remedial work and prepared workover procedures.  Supervised complicated workovers. Designed completions and made decisions on artificial lift. Prepared budgets, quarterly reports and development plans

  • Exceeded production forecasts while cutting the budget by a minimum of 15% each year.

  • Devised a novel approach to seal off a very complicated casing leak that was flooding the field, saving over $300,000.

  • Created a Frac database to house all fracced wells in Austin Chalk.  The database aided in optimizing fracturing treatments and resulted in company-wide implementation.

  • Researched Austin Chalk waterfracs and identified several candidates to be stimulated when prices were more favorable.

  • Implemented a marginal asset management program that identified 43 high operating expense, low income wells.

  • Member of the team that researched and implemented a chemical program resulting in pumping-well run time of twice the industry average.

1996 Special Projects – Bryan, Texas

Directed a four-month research program evaluating scaling tendencies in Austin Chalk and the effect of wax beads used as a diverter in the performance of fraced wells.

  • Demonstrated the possibility of scaling problems in Austin Chalk and implemented a procedure to detect and bring the problem under control.

  • Analyzed pre and post frac well behavior and deduced that wax beads were incompatible with the majority of the wells. Benzoic acid flakes became the norm.

1996 Intern Engineer – La Grange, Texas

Participated in the day to day field activities.

  • Supervised several acid treatments and waterfracs.

  • Skilled on Amine H2S gas removal and Glycol dehydration.

  • Part of the team that brought the Kunze-Kasper project on line, a multimillion dollar well and sour gas plant that tested the Edwards and lead into several more wells drilled and yet a bigger sour gas plant.

1995 DOWELL – SCHLUMBERGER – Sugarland, Texas, Intern Engineer

Assisted marketing team with the preparation and teaching of several programs to DESC engineers.

  • Evaluated and debugged ProCade and WellLog.  The first is a history matching type analysis and production forecast program and the second is an easy to use Well Log analyzing tool.

  • Wrote the help manual for WellLog.

1995 PDVSA CONSULTING PROJECT- College Station, Texas

Assisted with the preparation and delivered the first Internet based Horizontal Wells course to engineers in Venezuela.
